The idea of a Museum to confront Britain's sins from the past has been around for some time. Most recently, historian William Dalrymple called for the creation of a "Museum of Colonialism". In 2018, a group of women in Kenya and the UK founded the Museum of British Colonialism; a grassroots, volunteer-led organisation to restore and make visible suppressed, destroyed or underrepresented histories of British Colonialism. Since that time, the MBC team, and many hundreds of others who have collaborated with us since our inception, have been grappling with these questions; what could a museum of British colonialism look like; which stories are told; whose voices are amplified; which spaces and objects are relevant; how do we challenge the current production of knowledge and de-centre Western hegemony from museum practice. What, in doing so, is our collective mission? Confronting Britain’s past, including its heritage of colonialism and slavery, is a necessary but uncomfortable national reckoning that needs to take place. Join William Dalrymple, Priyamvada Gopal, Nana Oforiatta Ayim and Chao Tayiana on November 10th to consider and confront these questions with our chair, Renée Landell as we imagine the future of museums.
