Vintage Otis Escalators @ Southdale Center - Edina, MN

These are the escalators at go down to the lower level of Macy's at the Southdale Center. This mall was the first indoor shopping center to open in the United States, and these are the only completely original escalators remaining from when the mall opened in 1956! Originally, these were part of the main escalators in the Dayton's store, but in the early 1990s it was torn down and replaced with the what is now the current Macy's. The lower level is still inside the department store, and these escalators survived that. Beyond that, I'm also really surprised that these survived all of the renovations this mall has gone through over the years since then. These are still in great shape, although the hand rails could use a good cleaning. [Recorded July 2024]
