Cellulitis is a common, potentially serious bacterial skin infection. The skin appears swollen, red, and is typically painful and warm to the touch. Cellulitis usually affects skin on the lower legs, but it can occur in the face, arms, and other areas. It occurs when a crack or break in the skin allows bacteria to enter. Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida. Tinea Pedis, aka Athletes Foot, is a common skin infection of the feet caused by fungus. Symptoms may include itching, scaling, cracking, and redness. In rare cases, skin may blister. Impetigo. Impetigo is highly common and highly contagious. It mainly affects children and infants. Impetigo usually appears as red sores on the face, especially around a child's nose and mouth, and on hands and feet. The sores burst and develop honey-colored crusts. Varicella Zoster Virus, or VZV, is one of nine herpesviruses known to infect humans. It causes chickenpox (varicella) and shingles (herpes zoster). VZV lies dormant in the nerves, including the cranial nerve ganglia, dorsal root ganglia, and autonomic ganglia after initial infection. Furuncles & Carbuncles! A furuncle is a painful boil that forms around a hair follicle. A carbuncle is a collection of boils that develops under the skin. When bacteria infect hair follicles, the follicles can swell and turn into boils and carbuncles. Necrotizing fasciitis. NF, also known as flesh-eating disease, is an infection that results in the death of soft tissue. It is a severe disease of sudden onset that spreads rapidly.
