Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder affecting up to 5% of children and adolescents in Europe with symptoms often persisting into adulthood. Despite the high number of cases involved, there is often a paucity of services capable of taking on this growing group of young people with ADHD who are no longer able to be followed up by the pediatric services but are still too young to be taken on by adult services. How can we avoid treatment drop out and offer the guidance and support required during this vulnerable transition period? During this conference, Dr Susan Young will review not only the difficulties encountered by these young people and their families but also those of the child and adult clinics involved, identifying obstacles to the transition process. In conclusion, she will make recommendations for developing specific transition services capable of treating and following up patients with ADHD thus bridging the care gap between these two periods. Dr Susan Young is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Forensic Clinical Psychology at the Centre for Mental Health, Imperial College London. She is also a Consultant Psychologist for the Broadmoor Prison Hospital and Director of Forensic Research and Development for the West London Mental Health Trust.
