VISUAL ARTS: Millie Munro - ‘Crack in the Pretence’ Today a work that explores self portrait in a special way, through cyanotype. Printmaking “My body of work explores the pursuit of flawlessness among adolescents, highlighting the beauty found in imperfection. It addresses themes of vulnerability, fragility, identity and transformation. We are cast into the world with ingrained expectations and stereotypes regarding how we should look, act and express our emotions; however, those who are openly vulnerable are often criticised, resulting in the masking of true identity and the stigma surrounding hamartia and your ‘Achilles heel’. “Through my deliberate use of cyanotype, I worked with a medium that is inherently imperfect and can easily yield unpredictable results because the techniques are based on chance, which allowed me to create raw and personal pieces of work. “I aimed to create an artwork reflecting my own experience of measuring myself against others and the complications arising from exploring my identity. In this way, my work serves as a form of catharsis and acceptance. One person’s flaw can be seen as beauty by another, but is a fleeting memory. “My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Sally Mann, Dara Scully, Yee Sookyung, Tamara Dean, Lluis Estopinan, Doris Salcedo, Frida Kahlo and Evgenia Efstathiou as well as musical artist Larde. Lorde’s deep expression of the human experience through introspective lyricism and raw emotional tone has significantly shaped the conceptual depth of my work. “I was also inspired by the visual language of her new album Virgin, particularly the cover art, which evokes themes of vulnerability, femininity and transience - aligning with my own exploration of identity and emotional nuance.” Congratulations Millie, and your teacher Liz! Filmed by Summer Douar, and edited by Michael McLennan. Featuring photos by Michael McLennan, Liz Land and Kim Kofod. Music by Yehezkel Raz courtesy of artlist.io. 'A Crack in the Pretence' was selected for Smart Expressions, a showcase of HSC Visual Arts run by Willoughby City Council.
