A special video unboxing review of the new Synology DS215j NAS box. NAS - Network Attached Storage. The performance of the NAS unit and drives are quite fast (don't feel lag in waiting once I retrieve data on the drives), I have my Hitachi Drives (formerly IBM, Hitachi and now owned by WD also) 2 x 3TB 64MB cache SATA3 7200RPM Deskstar drives with the Synology NAS. If you have 2 similar drives, you can either use it to set up for the drives to be mirrored or as 1 big disk (concatenated). The advantage of mirroring is if 1 disk fails, your data will still be there on the 2nd drive. If you make 1 big disk and you lose 1 disk, you risk your data being lost. I highly recommend that you do the mirror solution just in case a spindle drive fails, this usually happens at the worst possible time. The default is set up on mines as mirrored drives. This NAS is quite easy to set up and the user inference is pretty self-explaining once you play with it. You will need to map the drive on the computer in order to access it. The NAS box would power down if not used but sometimes wakes up somehow by itself but when it's off it's whisper-quiet with the fan running only. It does take some time like 2-3 mins to power back on after sleep mode. Price-wise, the drives cost more than the NAS box. Total with tax is $508 for this configuration with tax. I had purchased from Amazon.com given they had the whole package. Best to read the reviews on the website before buying and if it suits your needs. Check out the video review demo. Thanks.
