Cool Cumulus - Timelapse Desert Thunderstorm Clouds in Extreme Contrast V11864

August 2012 brought some very hot and humid conditions to the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys in Southern California... This tropical air comes up from the southeast each summer creating ideal conditions for afternoon thunderstorm formation over the desert areas. In these sequences, we can see these clouds forming and spreading - some reaching into the upper troposphere where they fan out into the classic anvil shape of Cumulonimbus. As the storms mature and then finally collapse, the magic of timelapse photography reveals some very interesting atmospheric movement - with cloud remnants twisting and swirling in weird ways. These scenes were filmed with tripod-mounted Canon 5DMk2 and SX10-is digital cameras.
