IG & Twitter @chimezieiii (Music starts at 1:19) Boldy James returns for the third time this year this time with the prodigy producer, Jay Versace, who marks his first collab album with this project, “The Versace Tape”. After breaking through with his Alchemist collaboration, “The Price of Tea in China”, Boldy continues to keep the spotlight on him as he raps descriptive, luxurious but still gritty rhymes about his Detroit upbringing over beautifully orchestrated soul-sampling beats. Thematically, this album opens up with an entire skit that sounds like a news station detailing a robbery of some Cartier glasses. This random showcasing of a crime that includes a luxurious item essentially defines Boldy James’ content throughout this album. The content is admittedly very similar to what Boldy was rapping on “The Price of Tea in China” and even on his other prior projects. Boldy sticks to what he knows and what he’s experienced in his life as a survivor in Detroit. Boldy goes on to detail cooking up and selling dope, his success and achievements after blowing up with “TPOTIC”, his life of luxury as a rapper but also as a street kingpin, the dangerous pathways that exist in living the street life and more. The album balances between glamorizing luxury and vile crime because this is what Boldy James is used to. Lyrically, Boldy cannot miss. Plain and simple, he is incapable of having a bad verse, wack line, weak flow, any of that. He has been repeatedly demonstrating that he is one of the best wordsmiths out right now. He performs like an artist that has been perfecting their craft for years on end. The fact that his content is fairly close to the content in his prior albums but is still able to retain the listeners attention, goes to show that his lyricism and ability to tell stories is incredibly in depth. The references he pulls out are somewhat familiar but still unique and original to his craft. What’s extremely impressive is just the way the man delivers his bars and keeps his intense but laidback rhyme schemes on lock for entire verses. His non chalant demeanor makes his raps even more genuine and really feels as if you’re listening to a person just tell their personal stories to you. Sonically, Jay Versace meets and exceeds all expectations placed before him. His signature soulful and swaying loops are beautiful and lay this luxurious backdrop for Boldy to shine through. The beats aren’t too intense or heavy with drums and bass but rather rely more on the melodies of the soul, funk and jazz samples that Jay manipulates to produce these calming and ear grabbing beats. While The Alchemist used beats that moreso sounded cold and gritty on “TPOTIC”, Jay’s production sounds more glamorous and honestly warm to an extent. All in all, this is a great tape that only adds to Boldy James’ recent top tier catalogue. Though it may not be as delicately arranged as “The Price of Tea in China”, this project is a perfect follow up for such a high class album. Thanks for watching and reading!
