(3 Jul 1998) Spanish/Nat The Bolivian government has begun eradicating all coca plantations in the region of Chapare about a hundred miles from the capitol. The new operation is stage two in the country's battle against the cultivation and illegal export of drugs - namely cocaine. A region normally off limits to the media due to heavy militarisation - has been opened up for a few journalists to witness the army's operation. Over a thousand soldiers and policemen of Chapare gathered en masse to destroy local coca plantations. This time they brought the media along. It is not the first time the government has used the military to enforce its policy of crop eradication. During the first operation at the beginning of the year, Bolivian military forces eradicated some 36-hundred hectares of coca crops leaving one person dead and six others injured. In the past year, the government have compensated farmers for crops voluntary burned. This year, they are only offering to pay a part of the value of the crop burnt - but coca farmers say it's not fair and want full compensation. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We're optimistic and we think we'll accomplish the goals agreed between the Bolivian and U-S government at the date to be set." SUPER CAPTION: Francisco Zannier, Director General of DIRECO (Direccion de Reconversion de la Coca) - Directorate of Coca Reconversion For now the farmers are receiving 8-hundred U-S dollars for the eradication of each hectare until the 1st of October. After that date, farmer's won't receive any compensation for the eradication of coca crops.
