Seoul Walk: Euljiro 3-ga Station to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station

#4k #WalkingTour #Korea Eulji-ro is a road in central Seoul named for a 7th-century general of the Goguryeo kingdom, Eulji Mundeok, who successfully defended against an invasion by the Chinese Sui Dunasty. An underground shopping mall runs beneath Eulji-ro from City Hall Station two at the west end to Dongdaemun HIstory & Culture Park Station at the east end, connecting pedestrians with five Line 2 subway stations, all of which are transfer points with other lines. Eulji-ro runs from City Hall in the west, past the popular shopping district of Myeongdong, between the well-known Bangsan and Jungbu Markets, and past Dongdaemun Market to terminate at Toegye-ro near Sindang Station. On this walk, we start on the 3rd block (3-ga) of Eulji-ro at Gate 7 of Euljiro 3-ga Station, a transfer point between Seoul Subway Lines 2 and 3. We get a glimpse of the passageway, running left and right, that forms the underground shopping mall, but we make straight for Gate 7. At 00:44, we emerge onto Eulji-ro during a period of moderate traffic. This street can get backed up pretty badly at certain times of the day. We get a good look around before continuing on to the east. It's not long before we pass another entrance to the underground shopping mall (02:23). We'll see several of those in the spaces between the subway station entrances as we continue on. The neighborhoods of Eulji-ro are primarily commercial. We can see numerous small shops on the main street, many dealing with interior design elements like lighting fixtures, paneling, wallpaper, paint, etc. Many more small shops and businesses can be found on the backstreets. Most of the buildings are quite old, but we can see some that have undergone renovations, like the recent work at 04:47, and a handful of recently constructed buildings like the Eulji Twin Tower at 06:07. It's here that we see Gates 10 and 9 to Euljiro 4-ga Station. Euljiro 4-ga Station is a transfer point on Subway Lines 2 and 5. It straddles the intersection of Eulji-ro and Changyeonggeung-ro, the latter street named for a Joseon-era royal palace a few blocks to the north. This end of Changyeonggeung-ro is coloquially referred to as Eulji-ro Furniture Street because of all of the furniture stores in the vicinity. We cross the intersection and continue onto the fourth block of Eulji-ro. We see many more interior shops here. We also pass by Junngbu Dried Seafoods Market (13:16) on our side of the street and Bangsan Market on the north side (13:53). The former is a wholesale market for dried seafood, nuts, and other snacks commonly seen in bars and restaurants. The latter is a wholesale market best known for selling pressed wrapping paper and plastic shopping bags. At 16:12 we come to the intersection of Eulji-ro and Dongho-ro. Crossing here, we leave the old buildings and interior shops behind. The 5th block of Eulji-ro is a more modern district, with high-rise hotels, office buildings, and deparment stores forming the cityscape. There's also a small park where shoppers and office workers often come to take a break (across the street at 17:31). At 23:44 we come to Dongdaemun Market. We see the Dongdaemun Design Plaza rising on the opposite corner where Dongdaemun Stadium once stood. Then we come to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (23:57), a major transfer point on Subway Lines 2, 4, and 5. We enter through Gate 12. This entrance is connected to the now shuttered Lotte FITIN fashion mall. At the bottom, we get a look to the west in the Eulji Star Mall passage (26:09) before making our way into the station proper to end the walk.
