The book of Job in the Old Testament addresses this troubling question: “Why do believers in God face troubles and suffering in life?” Job was a faithful man, yet God allowed him to lose everything he had and suffer terribly. Job’s friends confidently offered rational explanations for his suffering, but they were all mistaken. In the end, God taught Job that he needed to trust in him, even when life hurts. In our thirteenth lesson, we studied the end of Job’s final defense of himself. After proclaiming his innocence, he rested his case and asked for God to answer him. Before God answered, however, a fourth friend–Elihu–stepped forward to share his thoughts–lots of thoughts! Elihu spoke for six chapters! Elihu’s words form a bridge between the long speeches of Job’s friends and God’s final response. By the time Elihu was done speaking, Job–and we–are ready to hear God’s final reply.
