Foster Journey: He Had His First Meet & Greet! Positive Reinforcement Training w/ Dog Reactive Koa

It’s been over 10 months since Koa (Labrador/ Shepherd/ Rottweiler mix) came to us as a foster dog. He has been reactive to other dogs. We didn’t take him to a park for a long time since we were concerned that there are dogs out there that trigger Koa’s reactivity. However, if it is a regular park and not a dog park, dogs there tend to be very well behaved, and we have a lot of space between each encounter. Practicing looking up to those dogs and looking away from them has been successful. If this is just in our neighborhood, some of the dogs are reactive, so Koa has been on edge. We’ve been trying to practice this technique at a park and applying it in our neighborhood. He started to understand the concept of noticing other dogs is okay but we don’t want him to react. He is truly a sweet dog. He wants to please his humans and doesn’t want any trouble. Slowly but surely, he is learning new ways to respond to his environment in a calmer way.
