Why AWS is investing now, how the ASEAN playbook differs, and what enterprises should watch next. 2/ Jeff leads AWS’s regional strategy across ASEAN and highlighted fundamentals that matter. Sixty-one percent of the population is under 35 and 125,000 new internet users come online each day, creating a digitally savvy base for cloud and AI adoption. 3/ AWS has operated in ASEAN since 2010 and has brought regions closer to customers to enable local data residency. The footprint started in Singapore and expanded to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. 4/ The investment scale is significant and tailored to AI-ready infrastructure. Jeff referenced $5 billion in Thailand and Indonesia, $6 billion in Malaysia, and $9 billion in Singapore, all aimed at bringing capability closer to governments, enterprises, and startups. 5/ The Thailand region is expected to create strong economic halo effects. Jeff noted an estimated 11,000 new jobs annually and a $10 billion addition to Thai GDP, underscoring why AWS is deepening its presence. 6/ Sustainability is engineered into the strategy. Moving applications from traditional data centers to AWS is about 4.1 times more energy efficient and can reduce carbon footprints by up to 99 percent. New data centers deliver 12 percent more compute in a smaller footprint. 7/ Custom silicon is central to AI performance and efficiency. Graviton is about 60 percent more energy efficient than prior x86 types, Trainium 2 achieves roughly three times more energy efficiency, and cooling innovations reduce mechanical heat energy by up to 46 percent. 8/ AWS reached its renewable energy goal seven years early and is expanding regional partnerships to add green capacity. Customers receive carbon reporting tools, and ISV solutions help measure Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions to guide their energy transition. 9/ Skills and platforms are translating into adoption at scale. AWS has trained about 1.8 million individuals across ASEAN, with more than 600 free courses via Skill Builder. Techcombank runs a skills guild with over 700 participants to accelerate enterprise readiness. 10/ Democratization is accelerating. Kiro enables non-traditional developers to build applications, and Republic Polytechnic in Singapore has integrated it so design students without coding backgrounds can create working systems. 11/ Outcomes are tangible. Telkomsel, with 150 million customers, improved incident diagnostics by more than 20 percent using generative AI. Chiang Mai University supports over 52,000 users with ChatGen and Matthew for enrollment, summaries, and policy responses. 12/ Financial inclusion is advancing through cloud and AI. Trust Bank in Singapore and GX Bank in Malaysia onboard customers in under three minutes, and in Thailand, Axons helps farmers analyze soil to improve crop productivity by about 20 percent. 13/ Jeff sees strong regional momentum around open source and local-language models. He cited platforms like Botnoi in Thailand supporting more than 20 languages with over 10 million users, GCash in the Philippines with 60 million users, and Grab running more than 1,000 models on AWS. 14/ Convergence points for GDP impact include modernizing core banking, AI-based SME credit scoring that can unlock 700,000 new SME customers from three photos, new connectivity via Project Kuiper, robotics innovation in manufacturing, and public-sector AI interventions. 15/ Trust and responsibility are foundational. AWS is certified on ISO 42001 for responsible AI, Bedrock provides guardrails and Automated Reasoning to reduce harmful content and hallucinations, and NOVA model safeguards help enterprises innovate across diverse regulatory environments.
