The historic center of Cesena, gathered under the ancient Rocca Malatestiana, contains churches and palaces of historical and artistic interest and preserves part of the walls that surrounded the city since the Middle Ages and a large part of the towers and gates. The main square is Piazza del Popolo, characterized in the center by the Masini fountain, dating back to the end of the sixteenth century. Overlooking it are the town hall, the Loggetta Veneziana, the Rocchetta di Piazza and the church of Saints Anna and Gioacchino. Connected to Piazza del Popolo by Via Zeffirino Re, is the Palazzo del Ridotto, a building dedicated to Pope Pius VI, this ancient palace is surrounded by three squares: Piazza Almerici; Piazza Bufalini, where the Malatestiana Library is located, a library that the great humanist Flavio Biondo already considered one of the best in Italy and included by UNESCO, the first in Italy, in the Memory of the World Register. The cathedral, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and built in Gothic style, dating back to the end of the fourteenth century, with a crypt that has contained the remains of St. Mauro for centuries. Then there is the church of Sant'Agostino, built to a design by Vanvitelli, and the church of San Domenico (conserving numerous paintings) and, just outside the historic center, the abbey of Santa Maria del Monte, which houses paintings of notable historical-cultural value and a collection of ex-votos among the largest in Europe, consisting of painted panels from 1400 onwards that depict the miracles with which the Virgin of the Mount expressed her protection to Cesena and the Cesena people. In the Chiaramonti district there are some palaces, built or embellished during the period of the Cesena popes. In addition to the monumental palaces present in the Chiaramonti district, in other areas there is the Romagnoli palace, a majestic seventeenth-century building decorated by Milani; Palazzo Ghini, designed in the 17th century by the architect Pier Mattia Angeloni, whose monumental courtyard overlooks the four statues of Francesco Calligari depicting four divinities; Palazzo Masini, rich in neoclassical pictorial decorations; Casa Sirotti, of very ancient construction, in which San Carlo Borromeo also resided. Cesena also owes its Rocca to the Malatesta family, one of the most imposing in Romagna, with a courtyard and two central towers, called "Maschio" and "Femmina". In Piazza Guidazzi is the Alessandro Bonci theater, completed in 1846 based on a design by the architect Vincenzo Ghinelli; it has a neoclassical style facade typical of Italian theaters of the period.
