Ai Overview: THE HISTORY OF TFL ROUTE 40: Began in the 1950s,initially running between Wanstead and Herne Hill. Its route has changed over time,with southern termini moving from Herne Hill to Dulwich in 1994 and northern terminus that was extended to Blackwall DLR being shortened to Aldgate in 1999.The route was replaced by route 40A in 1956 but resumed its own operations and has seen modern vehicle updates,including the introduction of electric buses. KEY HISTORICAL POINTS, 1950s: The route is established,running from Wanstead to Herne Hill. 1994: The southern terminus is moved from Herne Hill to Dulwich. 1999: The route is withdrawn Blackwall and Aldgate following the opening of the Jubilee Line Extension. 2023: The route is operated by London Central using existing MCV EvoSetis buses, and then fully converted to new Enviro 400 City EVs in October of that year. H I S T O R Y: When the London Passenger Transport Board took responsibility for London bus operations on 1 July 1933,route 40 was an established route operating from Camberwell Green to Wanstead via Elephant & Castle,London Bridge,Aldgate,Limehouse,Canning Town, and Forest Gate. On 12 October 1938, the route was extended from Camberwell to Herne Hill via Denmark Hill. On 27 January 1965,it was withdrawn except during weekday peaks between Herne Hill and Aldgate and replaced by route 40A, at the same time brand new AEC Routemasters were introduced. From 18 April 1970,route 40 only operated on weekends. On 3 August 1976, the brand new Daimler Fleetlines were introduced alongside the existing AEC Routemasters. On 22 April 1978,it resumed weekday operations operating between Herne Hill and North Dulwich. On 24 April 1982,it was withdrawn between Poplar and North Woolwich. On 9 June 1984,the AEC Routemasters and Daimler Fleetlines were replaced by brand new Leyland Titans. On 26 April 1997, the route was retained by London Central,at the same time Leyland Titans were replaced by brand new Northern Counties Palatine bodied Volvo Olympians. In July 2002, Northern Counties Palatine bodied Volvo Olympians were replaced by Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs which were introduced to convert the route to low floor operation. On 2 May 2009, the route passed to Travel London operating from their Walworth (WL)garage with brand new Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s introduced. On 15 June 2019,the route was withdrawn between Aldgate and Elephant & Castle and was rerouted to Clerkenwell Green via Blackfriars Bridge and Ludgate Circus to replace route 45. On 6 October 2023,the route converted to a full Enviro 400 City EV bodied BYD D8UR-DD operation. As of 27 May 2024 until early September 2024, the route is diverted towards Clerkenwell Green after bus stop J at Blackfriars Station via Fleet Street,Fetter Lane,New Fetter Lane,Holborn Circus and Charterhouse Street to Farringdon Road re-joining normal route at bus stop A at Farringdon Station.No change towards Dulwich Library.
