I really struggled cutting matts for art shows when I was a new art teacher, so I am making this video for my younger self! Start by measuring the artwork, and I always write that down in pencil on the back. I added four inches to both numbers for a two inch frame. For this artwork, it was 6x7.5 inches so I will cut a 10x11.5 piece of mat board. If you want a 3 inch frame, you would add 6 inches etc. Then use the cutting guide to draw out your frame so you can double check your math and know when to stop when using the cutting blade. Make sure your set scale is set to the size frame you want, 2 inches for this example, and then add about half an inch to it. This will equal a fourth of an inch of overlap so the artwork goes behind the frame to attach it easily. Sorry, metric system users! You can add more if you want less of the artwork to show, but half an inch works well for me. Then cut your matt from the back side and the Logan Elite Mat Cutter has a beautiful beveled cutter. I put a piece of scrap mat board behind the frame so that it does not cut into the wooden matt cutter. Cut a little past your pencil marks so the center of the mat board pops out easily. Once it’s cut (and if it’s giving you a rough edge it’s time to change your blade), tape the artwork to the backside of the mat. If you want it to be more secure, attach a piece of mat or poster board on top of the artwork to protect it with more tape. Affiliate Shopping Link: https://amzn.to/4lv7Qj3 HI!
