Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment | SSSS - Ritter Disease

In this video I have discussed Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSSS) or Ritter Disease. It is caused by epidermolytic or exfoliative toxins A or B of Phage group 2 Staphylococcus aureus. Foci of infection are nasopharynx, umbilicus, urinary tract, a superficial abrasion, conjunctiva, or blood. Clinical features are mediated by hematogenous spread of the toxin in absence of specific antitoxin antibody. SSSS typically occurs in infants and young children younger than 5 years of age. This disease range from localized bulbous impetigo to generalized cutaneous illness. Onset of rash is preceded by malaise, fever, irritability, and exquisite tenderness of skin. erythema develops diffusely. It is accentuated in flexures and periorificial area. Conjunctiva may be inflamed. Complications include sepsis, pneumonia, and fluid and electrolytes disturbance. However, healing occurs without scarring in 10 -14 days.
