Schools are integral to nurturing and building practices and habits that promote sustainability and resilience for life, and sustainability is a big focus for the EtonHouse schools. In 2022, the EtonHouse International School Broadrick became the first school in Singapore to house its very own aquaponics project. Aquaponics is a sustainable farming method that combines aquaculture (farming fish in water) with hydroponics (farming plants in water) and omits the use of soil, chemical fertilisers and pesticides. As a result of this project, the Broadrick school community enjoys fresh produce from farm to table without chemicals. Students also benefit from practical STEM lessons based on the sustainable farming system and also learn about what makes agriculture sustainable. Food grown hyper-locally on the school compound also helps decarbonise the food supply chain as it doesn’t need to travel a long distance and saves energy by not requiring a cold chain, which makes it environmentally friendly too! The project is a collaboration between the school community of teachers and students and V-Plus Agritech, a homegrown Singapore company that empowers communities and individuals in smart and sustainable farming.
