This is a short demonstration of the Tandberg IS10 language laboratory. The IS10 was launched in 1985-86, and could accommodate up to 100 student units per system. There is connection facilities for video equipment, and for slide projector control. The tape deck controls are all digital by RS232 serial communication. Each student recorder is assigned with a number between 1 and 100, and are connected in parallel to a ribbon cable that runs through the classroom. The end of the cable is plugged into the master console. The power for the student units is supplied by a 15 volt, 40 amp switching power supply. The master console has its own power supply that provides the various voltages needed for the control equipment and the audio power amplifier. The cassette decks is a 2 track mono, 2 motor, single capstan design. The teacher's instructions are recorded on the upper track, and the student may record on the lower track. Both tracks can be listened to at the same time, and have separate volume controls. The decks usually runs at standard 1 7/8 ips speed, but may also run at 7 1/2 ips for fast copying a program from the tape deck in the master console to any number of student decks. The decks have 2 motors for the tape transport: One for the capstan and one for winding. The capstan motor has electronic speed control. A third motor is used to raise and lower the head bridge and pinch roller. Additionally, there is one solenoid for the brakes and one to release the cassette lid. Frequency response 60-14.400c/s, SN ratio 58dB.
