Can Night Vision Compete with Thermal for Hog Hunting?

In this video we compare top of the line Gen 3 Filmless White Phosphor Night Vision against several of the current thermal scopes and monoculars from Pulsar, including the Helion XP28, Trail XP50, and the Apex XQ38. All of the footage in this video was taken during actual hog hunts. Available ambient light ranged from starlight to full moon, terrain ranged from open pastures and fields to wooded areas. This video also includes night vision footage with and without use of supplemental IR illumination. While we feel that the footage included in the video provides a good representation of how night vision technology compares to thermal imaging under various night hunting conditions, I will add the following: Gen 3 night vision is an amazing and extremely versatile technology that has specific advantages over thermal imaging for applications outside of hunting at night. Additionally, for night hunting, NV/image intensification technology is an excellent compliment to thermal for navigation purposes, especially covert navigation by vehicle. Night vision can also be beneficial for positive identification, although its advantages compared to thermal are often overstated. Why do we recommend thermal imaging over night vision for hunting? Thermal imaging offers far superior detection capabilities over night vision, and when hunting at night, detection is paramount. Despite having lower resolution compared to image intensification (I^2), modern thermal devices are capable of producing extremely detailed images which enable hunters to reliably and consistently identify and distinguish between various types of animals in a wide range of conditions and environments. Thermal can be used in complete darkness, as compared to image intensification, which requires ambient light or supplemental IR illumination in order to produce an image. Thermal can also be used and sighted in during the daytime without causing damage to the unit, which provides additional convenience and flexibility compared to image intensification, which can only be used in the dark.
