Ions are formed when an atom or a molecule gains or loses one or more electrons, resulting in an imbalance between the number of protons and electrons in the entity. An atom that has gained or lost electrons becomes electrically charged and is called an ion. In this video we’ll only look at how atoms form ions. Visualization software: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/b... When an atom loses one or more electrons, it becomes a positively charged ion, known as a cation. This is because the number of protons in the nucleus of the atom remains the same, but the number of electrons, which are negatively charged particles, has decreased. This creates a net positive charge. Conversely, when an atom gains one or more electrons, it becomes a negatively charged ion, known as an anion. This is because the number of protons in the nucleus remains the same, but the number of electrons, which are negatively charged particles, has increased. This creates a net negative charge.
