FIELD TRIP WITH PATRICK BLANC IN SRI LANKA - HORTON PLAINS

We follow the Botanist Patrick Blanc in the patchwork of forest and swampy savanna in Horton Plains, at 2000 m altitude. The plant species diversity as well as the growth habits and adaptive strategies are very well diversified in all the strata, from the forest understory to the epiphytes in the mossy forest. The most common species in the swampy savanna is the strictly endemic small erect bamboo, Kuruna densifolia and we observe also the endemic submerged aquatic plant, Aponogeton jacobsenii, only discovered in the early eighties while it is quite common. We also observe the elusive Elettaria floribunda known until recently as Alpinia abundiflora but we know that ginger names is a mess ! So strange Medinilla fuchsioides looking like an Ericaceae… Incredible Osbeckia lanata with tiny leaves and huge bright pink flowers. Of course, the Strobilanthes species are among the kings of the forest understory and the leaf architecture of the giant Hedyotis dendroides is just amazing !
