Matthew 18 teaches us what life in the church is meant to look like and in verses 5–9, Jesus delivers some of His strongest warnings. In this passage, Jesus makes two staggering truths unmistakably clear: 1. Christ and His people are inseparably linked 2. There are terrifying consequences for causing God’s children to stumble To receive one of Christ’s children is to receive Christ Himself. To harm, tempt, or lead one astray is to invite judgment. In this sermon we examine: -Why “child” is the Bible’s primary description of a believer -How adoption into God’s family grants real privileges and protection -Why love for Christ is proven by how we treat His people -The difference between direct and indirect temptation -How sin spreads inside the church through carelessness, criticism, and compromise -Why Jesus uses shocking language about millstones, hell, and self-mutilation -What it means to truly wage war against sin instead of making peace with it -The difference between the character of a believer and the character of the lost Jesus does not soften His words: It is better to lose a hand, a foot, or an eye than to face judgment for unrepentant sin. This message confronts us with hard questions: -How do we treat other believers? -Are we helping others toward holiness — or hindering them? -Are we ruthless with our own sin, or comfortable with it?
