Success means different things to different people. Most people measure success in life in terms of acquisition of wealth, property, knowledge and attainment of high social standing in life. Saul, who later became Paul, was an active member of the team of such mentality. The Apostle Paul had an encounter with Jesus Christ. His interaction with Jesus the Saviour of the world, gave Paul a much better meaning and understanding of what real success in life is. Consequently, Paul made a profound declaration which is recorded in 2Tim.4:6-8 “As for me my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race and I have kept the faith. And now the prize awaits me, the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge will give to me on the day of his return and the prize is not only to me but for all who eagerly look forward to his coming.” Our presence here for this burial ceremony is an affirmation and a good proof that death is real and that death comes to us unannounced. Today, we know, beyond all reasonable doubt, that Mr. Emmanuel Anang Ashidam is dead and will be buried. Tomorrow, it could be anyone of us. To Saint Paul, there is a righteous Judge, Jesus Christ who will reward everyone based on how one conducted his or her life while alive in this physical world. This ceremony is a reminder of what we know already. The very beautiful coffin that is placed before us is not an empty one. It contains the mortal remains of the gentleman referred to in this life as Bro/uncle Anang or Bro Emma or Laryea Anang or Emmanuel Anang Ashidam. The late, Emmanuel Anang Ashidam was born in 1948, out of the marriage contracted between Mr. Abraham Laryea Ashidam (aka Laryea Dzokwei) of Nii Ashidam family of Nii Kwei-Mensah of Amartse we ,Teshie and Madam Ayorkor Osabun NKpa of Okpon we ,Teshie. He was the fourth among six children of the mother but 8th among sixteen children born to the father who married three women. Until his death Bro. Emma was 77 years old. Both parents had long taken the lead ahead of him into eternity. In the year 1955, Bro, Emma then a child, was admitted to Presbyterian Primary School Teshie to be educated. Six years later he gained admission into Presbyterian Middle Boys’ Boarding School now TPSS. It must be noted that admission into such a school at the time in question, was not automatic. There was an entrance examination that a candidate had to pass to be admitted. Bro, Emma cleared that hurdle to earn the admission. In the Boarding School at that time. one could stay for four years to be granted the opportunity to write for the Middle School Leaving Certificate (MSLC) or cut short the four-year duration, write the Common Entrance Examination to enter secondary school. Bro Emma. decided to travel the full four- year term and obtained the certificate in the process. Before exiting the middle school, uncle Emma submitted himself to baptism and confirmation according to the presbyterian tradition, to be received into the membership of the presbyterian church. Until his death, he has kept his faith in the Lord and maintained his membership as well. After successful completion of the middle school education, uncle Emma gained admission to Accra High School or Ahisco for short, for five- year term and had his Ordinary Level Certificate in the process. Instead of proceeding to the Sixth Form to read science or Art course, he decided to do Accounting. In this area, he succeeded in obtaining the required certificate. As a qualified Accountant, he worked with a few companies as an auditor. While practicing this procession, he took a deep interest in importation of certain goods from outside Ghana. From this type of business, uncle Emma, made a lot of money. From all indications, he did not use the money for himself only but also extended the needed help to as many people as he came across. Uncle Emma. had interacted with many people as he climbed the education ladder and therefore one would expect that his friends would be many. However, Bro Emma was very selective and so had very few friends with whom to share ideas. But any one who got into his company was sure to learn a lot from him because in many areas of life, he had a lot of information. Bro Emma. was an active member of the leadership of Nii Ashidam Family. The rest of us now alive by the grace of God, would have wished a much longer life span for Bro Emma, to help in the administration of the family.
