Congress has passed a provision that will raise the age to purchase tobacco and e-cigarettes nationwide to 21. President Donald Trump has banned the use of flavored vaping products except for menthol and tobacco. The moves come in response to public pressure to reduce the soaring rates of teen vaping. Between 2015 and 2017, vaping increased among Louisiana high school students by 48.2% and among middle school students by 65.4%. Since August, nearly 2,300 people nationwide have been diagnosed with lung illnesses related to vaping, and 54 have died, including 2 from Louisiana. As a candidate in 2019, Governor John Bel Edwards voiced support for a ban on the sale of flavored vapor products. But, is the flavoring attracting younger users or the nicotine? What role do illegal cartridges play in creating lung issues? And how have e-cigarettes moved from a safer alternative for adult smokers to a new health risk for juveniles? Louisiana Public Square looks for answers on “Vaping in Louisiana” Wednesday, January 22 at 7pm on LPB and in New Orleans on WLAE.
