Sandy Brown was born in India, 25 February 1929. His mother was Indian and his father Scottish. The family returned to live in Scotland when Sandy was quite young. He started to learn the clarinet in 1941. In some ways this was to be quite significant because it was before the so-called New Orleans Revival had really got underway. As a result his main influence was Johnny Dodds and not George Lewis. As the burgeoning British traditional jazz scene trundled its way from the mid forties into the early fifties the clarinet players divided into devotees of styles: those who followed "classic" jazz players such as Dodds and Sidney Bechet and the "New Orleans" enthusiasts who attempted to clone George Lewis. Of the well known names Alex Revell and Cy Laurie along with Sandy, followed Dodds; Wally Fawkes revealed Bechet influences and Monty Sunshine took inspiration from George Lewis. This is, of course, over simplistic, but it will suffice. Sandy''s health began to fail in the mid seventies and he died on 15 March 1975. GO-Ghana: l Fairweather (tp) Sandy Brown (cl, voc) John R.T.
