Joining David Gill Gallery in 1988, the illustrious design duo, Mattia Bonetti and Élisabeth Garouste presented their 'Autumn Leaves’ collection, which included Table 'Pois', Chair ‘Grand Central’, and Firedogs ‘Inspirale Espirale'. These works established a playful, eclectic vocabulary that became the hallmark of their design practice. Bonetti, Swiss-born and receiving his formal training in textiles, approached design as an imaginative dialogue with art, reinterpreting historical forms with wit and originality. Garouste, born in Paris and trained as an interior designer, brought to the duo a theatrical sensibility shaped by her background in architecture, and early work designing stage sets and costumes for Jean-Michel Ribes. Multi-faceted by nature and anti-bourgeois in spirit, the duo’s combined vision evolved into an icon of contemporary design, indelible in collective memory, celebrated in exhibitions, and coveted at international auctions.
