Dr. Kristina Dervaitis, a Gynecologist in Newmarket, Ontario, (Canada) answers your IUC and contraception questions. What should be the “goals” of sexual health? Whose responsibility? Remember: BOTH the male and female partner is responsible for sexual health! 2 goals: 1) STI prevention 2) unplanned pregnancy prevention Only condoms prevent STI’S, so you NEED TO USE CONDOMS FOR STI PREVENTION with new partners. But condoms on their own are NOT GOOD ENOUGH for preventing pregnancy! There is up to an 18% CHANCE OF PREGNANCY WITH CONDOMS ALONE! IUC is considered “first line” contraception because it had the lowest chance of pregnancy (less than 1%). For more information on contraception and sexual health, I recommend the website of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada: www.sexandu.ca If you are interested in using IUC, to find a Canadian clinic/ health care provider near you for IUC insertion, go to: www.raice.ca Please note: this channel is provided as a volunteer public health education initiative (not for profit, no industry support, the channel is not monetized with ads). Dr. Dervaitis received her MD in 2000 and completed her OB/Gyn residency training in 2005 at Western University.
