Ultra-short-pulse (USP) lasers are used for cold-ablation processing to avoid thermal stresses and fabricate high-quality edges. Polygon scanners are particularly advantageous for line-oriented surface processing of workpieces – at fine resolutions and with freely definable patterns and structures. Thanks to high speed, these systems can considerably reduce material processing times. Next Scan Technology (NST), part of SCANLAB-Group, has developed a particular scanner design capable of moving the focused laser spot from 25 m/sec up to 100 m/sec and higher. Learn more about the innovative polygon systems in the video. The concept deflects the incoming laser beam by means of a multifaceted or polygonal mirror. Rotating scanners are one dimensional by nature, they produce a scanned line. To obtain a 2D scanning system, a secondary linear motion is required. The secondary motion's direction is perpendicular to the line scanned by the polygon scanner, and synchronized in speed with the rotational speed, to enable line-by-line surface processing. This type of scanning is usually referred to as raster scanning.
