(17 Aug 1995) Serbo-Croat/Nat Leaders of the former rebel Serb region of Krajina have vowed never to recognise Croatian authority. President Milan Martic and Prime Minister Milan Babic, meeting in Serb-held Bosnia late Wednesday night, said they would fight to retake the territory. Meanwhile hundreds of refugees are on the road through Bosnia on their way to an unknown future in Serbia. Hundreds of Krajina refugees line the road to Serbia. They have been forced to flee their homes into Bosnia after Croat government forces reclaimed land the Serbs took in 1991. Most of the Serb refugees do not know exactly where to go once they reach Serbia. The self-styled Krajina President and his Prime Minister are working on a plan to return to Krajina and allow the refugees to return. President Milan Martic and Prime Minister Milan Babic met for several hours in the Bosnian town of Bjeljina last night (16 August) to discuss the Croatian takeover of the territory. Martic was wearing military fatigues and refused to recognise Croatia in Krajina. SOUNDBITE: (Serbian) Babic is head of the government and he is responsible for the refugee crisis right now. Military authorities and myself will organize the return of the people and retaking of the territory which is under Croatian occupation right now. I know we cannot do that in five days, but we can wait 50 years or more. They will not be left alone, we must regain something which was ours for hundreds of years, and it will be ours again. SOUNDBITE: (Serbian) "Our people will be taken care of in Serbia. This is just temporary. We are all determined to take our territory back. Nobody can accept the fact that in Serbian Krajina there are no Serbs any more." Buoyed by their recent victories in Krajina, Croatian troops are now pressing their offensive into Serb-held western Bosnia.
