Derwent River Star is a Sydney based five piece that plays a unique sort of atmospheric, folk-influenced rock/post-rock. The drums/bass/guitar core is supplemented by melodic and wistful female vocals and one or more of the several stringed instruments currently included in the DRS repertoire. Glockenspiel and melodica are frequently used to provide an additional sonic layer. The range of instruments available to DRS provides for considerable instrumental interplay and an extraordinarily wide dynamic range – from the most delicate and fragile moments to a frenetic explosion of warmth and colour. Since its genesis in 2004 Derwent River Star has found considerable success. Their first gig being round one of the Sydney University Band Competition, Derwent River Star proceeded through all five rounds of the prestigious and highly competitive competition to be judged the competition winner. Alex Marsh sang lead and harmony vocals, and played glockenspiel, pump organ, melodica, and clarinet. Andrew Kemp played bass guitar, acoustic and electric guitars, mandola, harmonium, pump organ, and piano. Jude Lonergan played drums, percussion and harmonica. Luke Telford played electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and screwdriver'd guitar. Robin Dixon played banjo, baritone ukulele, cello, dobro, electric guitar, baritone recorder, double bass, piano, and violin. Additional musicians: Mr Tony Dupé also played piano, pump organ, clarinets, and recorders; constructed some loops; generally arranged bits & pieces; and added treatments and ambience. Charlie Dixon played trombone and euphonium. Sophie Grattan-Smith played trumpet and cornet. Felicity Errington played french horn. Sascha Yim played flute. Recorded by Tony Dupé at Saddleback Studios, Kiama NSW over a couple of weeks in July 2005, except for "Bottles and Boats" recorded by Bianca Figueroa at SAE Sydney over three nights in July 2006. Mixed by Tony Dupé. Mastered by Casey Rice. From what I have been able to ascertain, they released possibly three EPs: Dead Roads EP (2004) containing "Whiskey" The Winter Dark (2007) (see below) Three Shades EP (2008) containing "Tightropes and Ghost Trains" There Myspace page also lists a song "Brandy and Morphine" performed Live at the Hopetoun. I (very obviously) make no claim to own the copyright for this music. I am just a fan who is hoping this video helps other fans, both old and new, discover music they may have originally missed pre-Internet search engines ... or before they were born! ... they can then seek out their own original copy (as a true fan would) via second hand sales sites or via present day re-releases.
