Meet the Tenyimi family of Nagas

"Tenyimi is a natural family institution and it is not a union. We are Tenyimi by blood and not by choice" -Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu Tenyimi Day is celebrated on 22nd February every year. Tenyimi: The Naga tribes who trace their dispersal from Makhel, under Tahamzam district in Manipur, are known as "Tenyimi" or "Tenyimia". These are- 1. Angami 2. Chakhesang 3. Inpui 4. Mao 5. Maram 6. Pochury 7. Poumai 8. Rengma 9. Thangal 10. Zeliangrong (Zeme + Liangmai + Rongmei) Historically, the Tenyimia is a group of Naga tribes which trace common ancestry. According to the oral sources, these people basically dispersed from two villages known as Maikhel (Mekhrore) and Khezhakenoma to different parts of the present-day Nagaland, Manipur and Assam. Their claim of common descent is endorsed by shared memories and conjoined geographical spaces besides the close linguistic lineage that is found among the varied dialects. Tenyimia community inhabits the districts of Kohima, Phek, Dimapur, and Peren in Nagaland, Tamenglong and Tahamzam districts in Manipur, part of North Cachar and Karbi Anlong in Assam. They are united under the Tenyimi Peoples' Organisation (TPO), the apex body of the Tenyimi. It is formed to work for the welfare of the Tenyimi family, to strengthen family ties among the different units, and to protect the common interest of Tenyimi people. TPO units are spread across three states - Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam. The Tenyimi share a deeply rooted cultural heritage and inherent values. For instance, the traditional wrestling culture of Tenyimi is still practiced among these tribes.
