Your Photography Questions Answered

Here are some recent questions from my viewers and students that I think will benefit you. The answers may not please everyone but they are my honest opinions formed from 42 years of intensive photography learning and teaching. Some of these subjects will be addressed more extensively in the future with long form videos and demonstrations Why don’t I mention the brands and models of the gear I use? It really doesn’t matter much. Most of my images can be shot on any camera with a standard zoom lens. Most of my images can be lit with any brand of speedlight or strobe with an appropriate modifier. Brands and particular models don’t dictate results. What is the best portrait lens to use? This question, as with many photography questions, is down to personal taste. I will say that my preferred lens by far is a standard zoom lens. Ie. 18-140mm or 24-120mm depending on your brand of camera Many will say that a prime lens (50mm, 85mm or 100mm) is best but I find prime lenses too restricting. I rarely shoot at wide apertures so I can save myself heaps of money and be much more versatile with my standard zoom. I can shoot with a mild tele and 3 seconds later shoot from low down with a wide angle. It allows much more variety and is way more fun. Strap or no strap? Some viewers have noticed that I don’t use camera straps. I haven’t used a strap for the last 40 years. I really can’t see the need…only time I have dropped…… I have arthritis in my hands but modern cameras are easy to hold….. Should you edit your photos? Again, personal choice but I love editing images (and video) I see it as a critical part….. Because I shoot mostly glam and boud….. Years ago when we shot B&W film and processed it in the darkroom, we were editing the image in both the film and print processing. We could manipulate the tones, textures, colours, brightness of selected parts of the image and make clients thinner or taller by tilting the neg carrier. Photographers have been editing their images for over 100 years. Computers just make it quicker and less smelly. Should I use High ISO? I’ve mentioned this in other videos but don’t be intimidated into using low iSO because a you tuber says so. The controls on your camera are there to be explored and used where appropriate to achieve your image goals. I often shoot on 800 – 5000 ISO. Even with my 10 year old cameras the images look great. What can I do on a Tight Budget? Don’t let a tight budget stop you from creating great images. You’ve seen some of my videos using a $4.00 lighting set up. $50.00 can get you some amazing second hand lighting gear and with a 10-15 year old used camera And some imagination, you can create awesome, images. I started my professional career with a $50.00 camera and a $20.00 second hand flash. I sewed and built my own softbox which I used for the next 8 years. Don’t let lack of dollars diminish your passion for photography. How useful is High Speed Synch? In the 40 years since high speed synch was invented, I have never used it. I’m not going to explain here what HSS is (you can investigate it yourself) but, like many techniques praised on YT it has very limited use and can be dispensed with altogether for my photography. My camera and flash are capable of…….HSS Maybe one day I will find a use for it. We’ll see.
