A successful kidney transplant was performed at AMC for a patient from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, whose case was considered non-viable in US hospitals due to her long illness of diabetes and frequent hemodialysis. Although there was a high risk of rejection, Dr. Duck-Jong Han's team successfully performed the kidney transplant on the patient, Ms. Fatima Al-Ali, using a kidney donated by her younger brother. Dr. Duck-Jong Han / AMC Organ Transplantation Center kidney transplant team After the transplant was deemed unfeasible by hospitals in the U.S. and Europe when testing found that the patient had antibodies to the donor, she came to AMC. At our hospital, too, testing showed antibodies were present before the transplant. But through appropriate therapy to remove the antibodies, the surgery was completed very successfully. One week after the surgery now, both the recipient and donor are making rapid recoveries. This successful surgery for a patient whose case had been turned down by prominent overseas hospitals, once again confirms the high level of medical care provided at our hospital. Ms. Fatima Al-Ali / Kidney transplant recipient I've had Type 1 diabetes since I was six years old. Three years ago, I developed kidney abnormalities and was on dialysis for ten months. I'm so glad I had the transplant, and my health is improving. AMC signed a patient care agreement with the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi last November and this successful kidney transplant is expected to attract more patients from the Middle East region to our hospital.
