This time 20 years ago, Key and I were in the middle of completing our senior year community service project at Loyola High School, when I scribbled in the back of one of my notebooks, an acronym album title that would become the musical genesis for Honor Flow Productions. There is no “The B.L.A.C.K. Odyssey,” no “MAGIC iN madness,” no Japan tour, no Sunset Blvd shows, no Rhymefest, no ANYTHING we have achieved in the last 20 years without this album and the four-year journey during our initial college years it took to complete it and finally released into the world in 2010. We are still in debt to everyone who believed in this record: from those who played a role in its creation. Especially to those who still to this day, tell me you not only still play it, but own a physical CD of it, haha! I know I can speak for everyone involved when I say that right there made all those late nights worth it. And now for the first time, in celebration of Honor Flow Productions’ 20th anniversary, “V.I.S.I.O.N.S.” is finally available in streaming form exclusively on Youtube; visually presented with some vintage performance footage from the “V.I.S.I.O.N.S” era and sonically mapped out in a new sequencing to better the listening experience of the album’s arc. If you have never heard “V.I.S.I.O.N.S” before, what you are about to hear is a group of 19-20 something year olds learning how to write, record, produce, and mix records professionally for the first time, in real time. Straight ignorance on fire and doing whatever felt right creatively. Recorded on my mobile “studio” set up in a CVS Pharmacy receipt long list of apartments, bedrooms, dorm rooms, living rooms and anywhere we could make room. This is us on record, making sense of this brand-new world of “adulthood” we drove headfirst in. I wrote in the original liners the night before the album dropped, “Some people have scrapbooks, some people have home videos, we have this album, and God-willing, many more to come.” I’m proud to say we have all those things listed above, more albums since then, and STILL many more albums to come. The Odyssey for freedom and looking for the MAGIC in the midst of life’s madness, does not happen with us first daring to ask, “What Are Your Various Inspired Stories Insightful On Night & Sunlight (V.I.S.I.O.N.S)?” Era number # 1.
