Why I’m Sitting Out This International Women’s Day What does the evidence reveal about gender equality today and why would someone choose to sit out International Women’s Day? In the first episode of The Evidence Edit I explore the complex reality behind modern gender equality and why my perspective on International Women’s Day has shifted since becoming a parent. Drawing on research, data, and personal experience, this episode examines the tension between equality on paper and equality in everyday life. Inside this episode: • The gap between legal equality and lived experience • The invisible “mental load” and unpaid labour shaping modern family life • Early childhood influences on gender roles and how they shape career paths • The gender pay and pension gap and why motherhood changes long-term financial security • Workplace structures, childcare, and the pressures facing modern families • The UK’s cultural and policy context around care and parental leave • Class inequality and how economic realities shape women’s choices • The emotional cost of “having it all” and the pressure to keep giving to gain equality This isn’t a rejection of equality - it’s an honest examination of its real-world trade-offs, contradictions, and emotional complexity. A thoughtful, evidence-based conversation about work, family, expectations, and what progress really means in modern society.
