http://inmotionoc.com (949) 861-8600 [email protected] Join physical therapy assistant, Tyler, as he discusses hand and wrist injuries. Did you know that the hand and wrist are made up of an astonishing 27 bones and 34 muscles? All the bones in the wrist are attached to each other by a network of ligaments and the muscles are attached to the bones via tendons. Lastly, there are three main nerves of the hand—the median, ulnar, and radial nerve. They all start near the shoulder in a cluster of nerve roots and branches known as the brachial plexus. That is a lot of structure within a very small area! With the extensive use of cell phones and computers these days, our hands seem to be in constant use. Also, did you know that our hands and wrists are often the first body part to "catch us" when we stumble or fall? Though it might generally soften our impact, it is often at the cost of injury to your wrist and hand, which can become chronic if not properly addressed. If you find yourself experiencing pain in your wrist or hand in any of these structures, some pain relief options at home include RICE (rest, ice, compress and elevate) and stretching. However, if you feel as though that is not working or that it might need more attention, we have PT's who are able to diagnose exactly what is going on and how to get you feeling better! For a free screen, don't hesitate to call our Doctors of Physical Therapy and gain greater insight into your injury. http://inmotionoc.com (949) 861-8600 [email protected]
