Solenne by Sidney R. H. Hogg (1865–1945) is a short devotional voluntary of extraordinary delicacy and beauty. Published in Ecclesiae Organum, Volume II (1910), this piece won a prize in The Organist & Choirmaster competition for short, soft voluntaries in 1908. Despite its apparent simplicity, it demands absolute control of legato and touch — making it deceptively challenging and deeply rewarding. I could not find this piece anywhere online, nor any recording of it, so as far as I can tell this is its first appearance in the online world. Sidney R. H. Hogg studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and worked in Hampstead, but very little is known about him today. Which makes the beauty of this music even more striking. This performance is played on the Royal Hospital School Grand Organ, whose refined colours perfectly suit the intimate, devotional character of the piece. Because the original book was unavailable anywhere else, I have made Ecclesiae Organum, Volume II available (for free) via my Buy Me a Coffee page: 👉 https://buymeacoffee.com/rienschalkwi...
