On Sørøya island in Northern Norway the quaint and authentic fishing village Akkarfjord is located at the end of a sheltered fjord. The village was rebuilt in the late 40s after being burned down in 1944 and today has a population of around 80 people. It is an idyllic place where you feel that time has been standing still for the last 30 years. Something you can experience in this village walk on a cloudy day in August 2020. The walk starts in the scenic hills above the village and takes you down to the local shop in the main street. On the way you see traditional architecture from the 40s, how sheeps walks around in the street and the picturesque decorations that people have made outside their houses. You also see what is left of a house that burned down in May 2020 (at 3.55). The whole village mobilized to prevent the fire from spreading and the local shop contributed water and tobacco (!) to the fire fighters. In the harbour both modern and old fashioned fishing boats can be seen at anchor. Fun-fact: The name Akkarfjord means "the fjord with squids" (Akkar is the Norwegian name for the "European flying squid"). Akkarfjord can be visited by taking a fast ferry from the nearby city Hammerfest. The area is very nice for hiking and from Akkarfjord you can follow a hiking trail to the amazing Tarhalsen lighthouse. • A walk to the edge of Europe! Tarhalsen li... - movie from Tarhalsen! If you are more ambitious you can follow a 100 km long trail to Hasvik village on the other side of the island. Sørøya (Northern Sami: Sállan) is Norway's fourth largest island in terms of area. The 811-square-kilometre (313 sq mi) island is divided between Hasvik Municipality and Hammerfest Municipality. It is often claimed to be "one of the most beautiful" of the islands in Norway. In 2012, the population of the island was 1,092. The island is very rocky and mountainous. The highest point on the island is the 659-metre (2,162 ft) tall mountain Komagaksla on the southern shore of the island. The coastline is very jagged and has numerous fjords that cut inland from the open ocean. The island is surrounded by the Norwegian Sea on the north and the Sørøysundet strait to the south. #visitnorway #sørøya #villagewalk
