Iraqi police by their parked car STORYLINE: A big explosion - apparently a roadside bomb that detonated prematurely - occurred in a pile of rubbish in central Baghdad late Friday. There were no casualties reported. Piles of shrapnel lay about the scene and a taxi was badly damaged. A large crater was left by the blast, which happened near the People's Stadium, about a mile northeast of the Palestine Hotel. Many among the huge contingent of international reporters, live and work at the hotel. The driver of the damaged taxi said he saw the bomb explode about 20 meters (yards) in front of him and his windshield blew in. He was not hurt. Many US soldiers and Iraqi police were quickly on the scene, keeping people back.
