This tutorial teaches you how to prepare and insert a file of contact records into Salesforce using Data Loader. The key steps include: Data Preparation: Ensure all contacts have a last name, format dates correctly, and use the appropriate account IDs. Mapping: Use the Data Loader to map fields from your prepared CSV file to the corresponding Salesforce fields. Loading: Load the data into Salesforce, review the success and error files, and verify the data in Salesforce. CHAPTER SUMMARY PART 1 - Preload Steps → Ensure your user workbook is nearby for referencing user IDs. Have your account workbook available for account ID references. If contacts have related accounts with legacy IDs, configure Data Loader to map to those IDs. If contacts lack related accounts, create an "OrphanContacts" account for their IDs. Create a legacy ID field on the contact object. Implement validation and automation bypass logic or temporarily deactivate them. Deactivate duplicate rules in Setup to avoid load failures. PART 2 - Data Preparation → Use API field names for mapping. Ensure every contact has a last name, replacing blanks with "unknown". Format email addresses correctly to avoid errors. The email opt field is hidden by default, requiring field level security adjustments for mapping. PART 3 - Contact Workbook Example → The "Sample Contacts" tab contains raw data. The "Contacts Mapped" tab transforms data for Salesforce acceptance. Record type information is transformed into record type assignment. Map to either record type name or ID, not both. Account name is not mapped, but the account ID is used. Contacts without related accounts are assigned to the "OrphanContacts" account. Owner and created by can be mapped to legacy IDs or using VLOOKUP. Replace blank last names with "unknown". Format birth date as MM/DD/YYYY. Format created date as a date time. PART 4 - Data Loader Steps → Save the prepared data as a CSV file. Open Data Loader and choose "Insert to Contact Object". Select the prepped CSV file. Map to record type ID, owner ID, and created by ID. Create a map and auto-match fields. Verify the mapping. Save success and error files in a designated folder. Rename the success file to "Contact Success". Copy the success data and paste it into the workbook. Navigate to a newly created contact record in Salesforce to verify details. PART 5 - Practice Exercise → Log into your Salesforce developer org. Create "Business Contact" and "Partner Contact" record types on the contact object. Create a legacy ID text field on the contact object. Adjust field level security for the email opt-out field if necessary. Copy the sample contacts and add them to a new tab in the workbook. Create your own map and compare it to the mapped contacts provided. Create a CSV file with your data and insert it into your dev org using Data Loader. Rename the Data Loader success file. Add the success file to the contact workbook. Verify your work in Salesforce.
