Building Resilience in Florida: Smart Rain Gardens for Urban Flood Mitigation

Zachary Eichholz, City of Cape Canaveral, Chief Resilience Manager. Robyn DeYoung, Environmental Protection Agency, Green Infrastructure Lead Stressors such as more extreme rainfall events, high amounts of impervious cover, and aging gray stormwater infrastructure have resulted in increasing urban flooding risks within the purview of the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council. In 2022, Stetson University and partners received a NOAA Sea Grant to support community engagement and a vulnerability assessment and regional resilience action plan. This effort led to Stetson University securing a $1 million grant in 2023 through the National Science Foundation's CIVIC Innovation Challenge to construct and monitor a “smart” rain garden in the City of Cape Canaveral.
