Joining us live on YouTube, 29th March at 7pm, is Charles Williams – owner and operator of Caerhays Castle Gardens and Estate in Cornwall, UK, representing four generations of Williams family ownership since the 1860s. His great grandfather, J.C. Williams, bred the original x williamsii strain of camellias at Caerhays in the 1920s which are now known throughout the world. Since returning to Cornwall in the 1970s, following a brief career in merchant banking, Charles Williams worked tirelessly, together with his wife Lizzie, at turning Caerhays Estate into a world-renowned spring garden and a tourist-hospitality destination with luxury accommodation. The gardens consist magical 140 acre English Heritage Grade II Listed woodlands and UK National Magnolia Collection – made up of over 600 varieties. Charles Williams continues to develop the plant material and garden design of this prominent Cornish estate, as well as being the senior partner of Burncoose Nurseries near Redruth. He also contributes daily to the Caerhays Garden Diary started in 1897 by his great grandfather and he serves as chairman of the Great Gardens of Cornwall. Mr Williams is a member of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Rhododendron, Camellia & Magnolia Group sub-committee and Caerhays has put forward numerous magnolias, rhododendrons and camellias for registration and awards.
