The song "Prière Sans Espoir" composed by Charles Danvers and with French lyrics by Pierre Benoit Buisson was introduced by Lucien Lupi on his EP "L'Amour Viendra" in 1956. American songwriter Carl Sigman, who as well as composing music and collaborating with other songwriters, also specialised in setting English lyrics to foreign songs and wrote the words for the subsequent 1957 American release by Percy Faith which reached #63 on the Billboard charts. Faring better that same year was pianist Roger Williams whose tinkling of the ivories gained him a #22 chart placing. A surprise version in 1958 was that by Gina Lollobrigida ( • Gina Lollobrigida - Till (1958) ). The song gained much wider recognition in 1961 when, titled "'Til", it became the début release of US girl group The Angels and reached #14 in the Billboard charts; and in Britain climbed to #35 with a version by Tony Bennett, and gave international Welsh singer Shirley Bassey a #14 success. The Vogues restored it to the U.S bestsellers in 1968 (#7), and in an extraordinary coincidence, Dorothy Squires (#25 in 1970) and Tom Jones, hitting #2 in 1971, completed a trio of only Welsh artists to have gained UK success with this song. I especially like the English-sung version by Dutchman Ben Cramer. Starting out as lead vocal with the group The Sparklings when 19, Ben began his solo charts career at 21 in the Netherlands with "Zai, Zai, Zai", more familiarly known in English as Suddenly You Love Me" by The Tremeloes. His transition from charmingly boyish teenage pop star to mature interpreter of quality songs was rapid, and helped in no small way by his outstanding major 1971 hit "De Clown". In 1976 he released two albums sung entirely in English. They deserved to — and should have — launched Ben internationally. One of these was 'My Love Songs', on which was included the Les Reed songs "Love Is All" and "Rain Of Love", Mort Shuman's "Sorrow" and Don Black's "If I Never Sing Another Song". Here is Ben's powerful version of the album's opening selection "Till".
