Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is a serious health hazard, with tighter controls to protect people working with crystalline silica substances (CSS) coming into effect from 1 September 2024. The introduction of the new regulations is a result of the risk imposed from exposure to RCS. The audits will measure compliance against Chapter 8A of the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012. Non-compliance matters will be managed via statutory notices. With the new CSS regulations in effect, SafeWork SA’s Construction team will also prioritise CSS-related notifications, requiring worksite visits and audits of safe work method statements (SWMS).
