The John Calipari era got off to a rousing start — even if it was an exhibition. Arkansas fans packed Bud Walton Arena on Friday to watch their first-year hall of fame coach roam the sideline dressed in red as opposed to the deep blue he wore as the coach at Kentucky for 15 seasons. His No. 16 Razorbacks did not disppoint, delivering an 85-69 win against the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks. D.J. Wagner and Boogie Fland led Arkansas in the win, scoring 24 and 22 respectively. Calipari and his Kansas counterpart, Bill Self, downplayed the significance of the exhibition game leading up to tipoff, but when the clock started, they went full-bore coaching mode — Particularly Calipari, who was hired last spring to replace former coach Eric Musselman in a hire that sent shockwaves through college basketball. The game was broken down into four 10-minute quarters instead of the standard 20-minute halves. This format was agreed to by the coaches before the game so that they would have more breaks to instruct their players in between quarters. Arkansas got off to a fast start, particularly Wagner. He scored 8 first-quarter points including a pair of three-pointers to open the scoring. The Razorbacks hit their first six shots of the game and built a double-digit lead in the third quarter that swelled to 20 before Kansas put together a mild comeback in the fourth quarter. Arkansas' 7-2 center Zvonimir Ivisic had a solid game inside, scoring 18 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. He also stepped out beyond the arc and knocked down a pair of three-pointers, the second with just over two minutes left. Dajuan Harris was sensational for Kansas, scoring 26 points on 11 of 17 shooting to go along with three steals. Both teams played without some key players who are nursing injuries, including Kansas center Hunter Dickinson and guard Rylen Griffen. Arkansas was without 6-11 Tennessee transfer Jonas Aidoo, who is also batting an injury. Arkansas will play another exhibition game Nov. 1 in Fort Worth, Texas, against TCU before opening the regular season at home on Nov. 6 against Lipscomb.
