Anyone who has been paying attention to our 1979 AMC Spirit AMX project, you saw the original state of the car when we purchased it and how much work has gone into it. Unfortunately in the LAST update video when we fired up our AMC AMX it was a mixed bag of emotions. We DID get the engine to cough and sputter and come back to life, unfortunately it also did so in a HUGE cloud of white smoke. The 304 V8 we swapped in was a "ran when pulled" unit, and let's be honest here we all know it's a crap shoot on whether or not those work out in our case it very much did not. There were extensive oil leaks from the oil pan and front cover, plumes of white smoke out the tail pipes from what we assume are stuck rings, and a host of other issues. Unfortunately in order to fix that stuff the motor would need to come BACK out to be disassembled, but, we had a potential solution. What about the ORIGINIAL 304 that was in the car at purchase? While yes it was missing the intake manifold leaving the heads open to dust/bugs/water/whatever maybe IT was salvageable and we could get it ready to swap in so just do a quick little, engine out/engine in swap? Well in order to find that out we had to tear it down so here we go, a mostly complete engine tear down of the last AMC V8, the 304 out of a 79 AMC AMX! Some good, some bad, some REALLY nasty. Give it a watch and give us YOUR advice, what would YOU do? More footage of this motor and project coming SOON as we try to get it ready to run by spring!
