Learn about Art History and Art Movements. This video is an overview of the Post-Impressionist Art Movement. It explores how the Post- Impressionist artists developed from the Impressionist artists. Neo Expressionism developed from Impressionism, and Post- Impressionism developed from Neo Impressionism. Neo Impressionist artists studied color theory, and the work of Chevreaux. They used Pointillism. The video explores the Neo-Expressionist work of Paul Signac. It explores the work of five Post- Impressionist artists, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin, Seurat, and Toulouse-Lautrec. These artists worked with some of the techniques of Impressionism, but were frustrated by its limitations. Each artist took Impressionism to a different level. Van Gog's art is expressionistic, and influenced the Expressionist artists. Cezanne worked with shape and form, and influenced the Abstract Art Movements of the 20th Century, like Cubism. Cezanne simplified complex geometric forms into simple shapes, and depicted the underlying structure, Gauguin explored color and shape, and his work is an example of Symbolist Art. Gauguin's work influenced the development of Primitivism. Seurat used Pointillism, also called Chromoluminarism, or small dots of pure color that the eye blends when standing far away from the canvas. The art of both Seurat and Gauguin influenced Fauvism. Toulouse- Lautrec made drawings and posters of Parisian nightlife. His drawings are known for bold contour outlines, and expressive color and energy. He worked in traditional media and also made posters with lithography. His art influenced artists like Andy Warhol, who embraced popular culture. These artists wanted to move beyond the objective representation of the external world. The experimented with bold colors, expressive brushstrokes, and distorted perspectives, paving the way for the development of Modern Art. Post Impressionism influenced future Art Movements like Fauvism, Cubism, and Expressionism. The art of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin, Seurat, and Toulouse-Lautrec shared a common thread of innovation and a desire to push the boundaries of artistic expression. These artists paved the way for the abstract and non representational art of the 20th Century. These artists demonstrated that art could be a powerful vehicle for expressing emotions, exploring Symbolism, and conveying abstract interpretations of the world. They made innovations in techniques, color and form.
