Mee grew up in a refugee camp on the Thai-Myanmar border, where her family was forced to flee following persecution by Myanmar's military regime. Mee's family is part of the Karen ethnic minority and her father was part of the Karen resistance for independence, a fight that continues to this day. Mee's story is part of Australia's Untold Stories, a series of oral histories of 12 former refugees who have rebuilt their lives in Australia. Their first countries include Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, Eritrea, Laos, South Sudan and Vietnam. These refugees are just a few of the million who have settled in Australia since the end of World War II through the Refugee and Humanitarian Program. Through their stories, we reflect on the contributions refugees have made in shaping Australia over the last eight decades, and the role everyday Australians have played in receiving and welcoming refugees, enabling them to build new lives free from persecution. Australia's Untold Stories is a series by the Refugee Council of Australia, the country's peak body for refugees, people seeking asylum, and those who support them. We advocate for humane, lawful and constructive policies towards refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia. Website - https://www.refugeecouncil.org.au/aus...
