This is how I use a simple tool to make green water easily! Many aquarium hobbyists have trouble culturing green water because the cultures tend to crash suddenly. But green water is such a good food for baby fish like guppies and other types of live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and moina that it is necessary to be able to culture green water reliably. To prevent having my green water cultures crash, I use a modified version of a secchi disk that allows me to monitor the density of my algae culture. In this video, I go over exactly how to use this secchi disk tool and provide step by step instructions on how to make one for your fish room so that you can start culturing lots of green water. Green water is essentially a floating collection of microalgae cells that consume nutrients and light to grow and reproduce. The more floating algae cells in the water the darker the green color of the green water culture. A secchi disk works by measuring the depth at which the disk is no longer visible in the water column. As the green water culture grows and gets more and more dense, the secchi depth reading will become shallower and shallower. Eventually the secchi reading will reach a point where the culture is no longer getting denser and the depth readings stabilize, this indicates that your green water culture has reached it's maximum capacity and is at the best time to harvest or feed to your fish or live food cultures. The materials to build this secchi disk are very simple and consist of a 3/8 inch wooden dowel, a few washers and a screw which can be purchased at a hardware store. For the disk itself, I used the bottom of an old yogurt containing and used a sharpie to draw the black and white sections of the disk. Thanks for watching!
